What We Support

People come to Phoenix carrying many different things. You do not need to know the right diagnosis, therapy modality, or category before reaching out.

What matters is what you are living through, how it is affecting you, and what kind of support might help.

You Don’t Have to Know Which Category Fits

Life rarely fits neatly into one specialty.

You might be navigating trauma and disability. Gender and family. Neurodivergence and burnout. Grief and a major relationship change.

Start with what you know. We can help with the rest.

Our Approach to Care

Therapy should make more room for your life, not ask you to shrink it.

We do not understand mental health in isolation from the world people live in. Your relationships, identities, history, body, community, material conditions, and the systems you move through all shape what you carry and what healing can realistically look like.

We start with context, not correction

A response that looks like anxiety, shutdown, hypervigilance, masking, anger, people-pleasing, or avoidance may have developed for a reason.

Rather than asking only, “How do we make this symptom go away?” we also ask what it has been protecting, what conditions shaped it, and whether you still need it in the same way today.

We do not treat difference as pathology

Queerness, transness, neurodivergence, disability, cultural difference, expansive relationships, and other ways of moving through the world are not problems for therapy to correct.

Our work is interested in what happens when people are given more room to understand themselves without constantly measuring themselves against someone else’s idea of what is normal.

The world around you belongs in the conversation

Racism, ableism, transphobia, migration, poverty, family expectations, healthcare systems, religion, work, housing, community, and access to resources can all shape mental health.

Therapy cannot remove every condition you are living within, but it can be a place where those realities are named rather than turned into personal shortcomings.

You remain the authority on your own life

A therapist may bring training, perspective, and tools. You bring something equally important: lived knowledge of yourself.

Your consent, boundaries, pace, goals, identities, and understanding of what feels possible matter throughout the work. Therapy is something we build with you, not something done to you.

Healing is bigger than individual coping

Coping skills can help. So can medication, insight, boundaries, rest, movement, creativity, and many other forms of support.

But people also need relationships, safety, resources, belonging, access, community, and environments where they are able to participate without continually fighting to be understood.

You do not need to live in Newport News to work with Phoenix.

Virtual care can be especially useful if the therapist who best fits your identity, specialty needs, insurance, or schedule is not located nearby.

What Happens When You Reach Out?

1. Tell us what matters to you

You do not need to arrive with the “right” diagnosis or know exactly what kind of therapy you need.

Tell us what you’re carrying, what you’re hoping for, and anything that would help care feel more workable for you, including therapist identity, lived experience, specialty, insurance, accessibility needs, schedule, or how you prefer to meet.

2. We look for fit, not just an opening

We consider the fuller context of what you shared and look at which Virginia clinicians may be a meaningful fit for your needs, preferences, and circumstances.

We know that feeling understood can matter just as much as finding someone with an available appointment.

3. We help make the next step easier

We’ll follow up with options and help you understand what comes next, so you are not left emailing therapist after therapist or figuring everything out alone.

You remain in control of the process. You can ask questions, tell us something does not feel right, or take the time you need before deciding.
