ABOUT ME
Akeem Parks is a Master of Social Work candidate at Howard University with a warm, grounded presence and a deep commitment to mental health equity. In his clinical internship, he supports individuals and families with care that is compassionate, client-centered, and culturally responsive.
Akeem focuses on anxiety, depression, trauma (including racial trauma), and the stress of major life transitions. He’s especially attentive to creating a space where clients feel seen, safe, and not rushed, where they can slow down, name what’s happening, and begin to heal at their own pace. He integrates practical tools for day-to-day relief with deeper work that honors each person’s story and strengths.
Guided by curiosity and humility, Akeem aims to help clients build confidence, strengthen relationships, and feel more grounded in themselves. His clinical growth and practice are closely supervised by Anim Aweh, LICSW (She/Her), ensuring thoughtful, ethical, and evidence-based care.
Why I Do This Work
“The work I do is shaped by the understanding that our struggles are never only personal, they’re connected to histories, systems, and environments that leave their mark on our lives. I want therapy to be a place where people can name those forces without shame, reclaim the dignity of their own story, and imagine possibilities that don’t end where systemic barriers begin.”
— Akeem Parks
My Approach in Practice
Every person’s story carries layers, family histories, cultural roots, systemic pressures, and personal strengths that often go unnamed. In our work together, I want to create a space where all of those layers can be seen and understood, without judgment or urgency to move faster than you’re ready.
I see therapy as a partnership where we slow down enough to notice what has shaped you and how it continues to live in your body, relationships, and choices. Together, we will look at the patterns that come from intergenerational legacies, systemic harm, and lived experience, while also building practical tools that help with daily struggles like anxiety, depression, or stress.
I draw from approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed and relational practices, and strengths-based frameworks. Sometimes that means finding grounding strategies for difficult emotions, sometimes it means unpacking experiences of racial trauma or systemic injustice, and other times it’s about discovering what feels meaningful and sustaining in your life right now.
How We Can Work Together
-
CBT, mindfulness practices, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), narrative therapy approaches, talk therapy, and trauma-informed care techniques. These modalities aim to empower clients by providing tools for self-exploration, emotional healing, and personal transformation within a culturally sensitive and supportive environment.
-
I support clients in developing healthier responses to stress, building skills for emotional regulation, and nurturing personal growth.
-
Our time together is not about rushing toward quick solutions but about creating space to slow down and notice what is happening beneath the surface. In sessions, you can expect me to bring steadiness, curiosity, and respect for the full context of your life. We may spend time naming how stress, relationships, or systems show up in your daily experiences, while also building practical strategies that support you outside the therapy room.
Sometimes this looks like unpacking the weight of trauma or transitions, other times it’s finding small ways to feel more regulated and connected in the present moment. I hold space for both, the immediate challenges you’re facing and the deeper patterns that shape your story. My goal is to walk beside you, helping you move at a pace that feels sustainable, with your values and agency always at the center.
Clients often come to me when they are:
Carrying the weight of racial trauma or systemic harm, and needing a space where those realities are named, validated, and not minimized.
Working through depression or anxiety, while wanting tools that support both day-to-day relief and deeper exploration of the roots beneath their distress.
Navigating major life transitions, such as moving, graduating, shifting careers, or experiencing family changes, and wanting steady support through uncertainty.
Seeking a therapist who understands the intersections of culture, identity, and belonging, and how those shape their sense of self, safety, and possibility.
Wanting to slow down in a world that often demands too much, and to reconnect with their own voice, pace, and strengths without judgment.
Looking for a collaborative and grounded partnership, where therapy feels less like being evaluated and more like being accompanied with curiosity and care.
No matter what brings you here, my focus is on creating a space where your experiences are held in their full context. My role is not to rush or prescribe, but to walk beside you as you discover what clarity, agency, and steadiness can look like in your life.
